Google AdWords cracking down on addiction rehab centers

Recommended Posts

Looks like a bunch of shady rehab centers are starting to crop up across the country preying on the opioid crisis. AdWords is limiting ads on relevant search terms. It is pretty similar to the action they took in the past against the PayDay loan industry.

While reading that article, a link in it caught my eye: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/31/business/fake-online-locksmiths-may-be-out-to-pick-your-pocket-too.html, since I used to be a locksmith.

WOW! I had no idea that industry had gotten so bad...when I had my business, it was awesome and you didn't need to rip folks off to make money.

It got really bad with locksmiths. Many of them were using homes of friends and family members to verify locations to show up in Google local results. Someone posted a pic several years ago where if you did a search for a locksmith, there were like 20 results in about 10 square miles all belonging to the same locksmith.

Then there was also using Wikipedia to exploit locksmith listings. http://blumenthals.com/blog/2009/12/07/google-maps-new-abuses-via-wikipedia-landing-pages/

For a brief moment, locksmiths were almost as bad as the adult industry in exploiting Google.
